The first centrifuge aboard the space station capable of running multiple gravity levels in the same experiment volume. Important for performing well-controlled experiments in microgravity. Capable of controlling temperature, humidity, gas levels, and gravity. Capable of dynamic auto-balancing.
My Role: Lead Electrical Engineer, Lead Firmware Engineer, Project Manager
Interesting Problems I had to Solve:
- Developing sensing and acutation hardware to dynamically balance a carousel rotating at 90RPM to meet strict vibration specifications.
- Designing embedded CPU SoM carrier boards with high-speed interconnects.
- Architecting hardware using NASA-approved materials and components.
- Desigining high-efficiency thermo-electric device drivers.
- Selecting high-spec COTs components to maximize life on-orbit, and desiging systems that facilitate easy replacement of components by crew.
Fun Facts:
- We initially tested the USB connection through the carousel slip-ring by attaching a USB sound card and playing “You Spin Me Round” by Dead or Alive through a speaker
